Starting in early 2011, the Focus in both North America and Europe will be the same vehicle. This is to be applauded because there was a big gap between the European Focus and the machine sold here. The European car improved on the basic goodness of the original, with better interior quality and driving dynamics. The U.S. car essentially stayed put: The original Focus was good enough to be a C/D 10Best winner, but the competition moved on, leaving the current version dead last in a recent small-car comparo.

The 2012 Focus certainly looks terrific, especially in five-door form. The engineers and designers felt able to make the Focus sportier (by lowering its seating position and overall height) due to the upcoming C-Max—a tall-roof, five- or seven-seat derivative off this platform—that fulfills the family-car mission. Compared with the current U.S. Focus, the new car is 0.5 inch lower (at 58.1 inches tall) and 3.0 inches longer (178.0 inches overall), and it has a 1.3-inch-longer wheelbase (104.2 inches). The 2012 model’s dimensions are close to the current Euro car’s, save for a wider track and lower stance.

Height of an adult female, weight of a gallon or so of gas—these are the critical dimensions of the carbon-fiber driveshaft running between the engine and the rear-mounted transaxle in the new Mercedes SLS AMG. We note this here because, despite the car’s retro-gullwing looks, the SLS is utterly bleeding edge—both in terms of its technical attributes and what it represents for Mercedes’ in-house tuner. It is not simply a Mercedes with bigger wheels and a breathed-upon V-8 or V-12. It is, down to its churning carbon-fiber core, AMG’s first dedicated automobile and the very antithesis of the overly complex and overweight half-million-dollar Mercedes SLR McLaren.

“The SLS is a serious super sports car,” says AMG chief of development Tobias Moers before taking a shot at the SLR, a carbon-fiber-bodied car that still managed to weigh in at 3858 pounds. “Our SLS weighs only 3572 pounds,” he says, nearly 300 pounds lighter than the McMerc. Keeping the 182.6-inch-long, two-seat SLS’s mass in check is its entirely aluminum construction (save for that driveshaft and steel A-pillars), a first for Mercedes-Benz. The aluminum structure weighs just 531 pounds, Mercedes says.

The most distinctive aspect of the SLS’s appearance is, of course, its roof-hinged gullwing doors, an homage to the iconic 300SL Gullwing. But AMG personnel took pains to point out that the doors are the only thing the SLS has in common with the 300SL. “We do not build a retro car at all!” AMG boss Volker Mornhinweg explains sharply. “In fact, we think it is the most advanced super sports car you can buy today.”

Those gullwing doors look spectacular. Unlike with the original SL, where one had to slide over a wide sill because of the space-frame structure underneath, it’s easy to access the SLS’s cabin. There’s only one issue: Riders need long arms to reach the distant handles at the bottom of each door to pull them closed.

The interior is simple and uncluttered, much like a current SL roadster’s. While the car’s structure is a pure AMG design, most of the parts, except for the shifter, are from the Mercedes bin. The instrument cluster is clear and easy to read, and we love the round HVAC vents. The center console has an aluminum finish, with carbon fiber an option.

Press the starter button on the center console, and the now-familiar, AMG-designed 6.2-liter V-8 awakens with an angry yelp. The idle is deep, and the revs rise and fall race-car swiftly. Code-named M159, the engine is basically a reengineered version of the M156 unit that’s fitted to AMG’s “63” models. The M159 comes with an all-new magnesium intake, forged pistons in place of cast ones, and optimized tubular exhaust headers. The engineers also switched from a wet sump to a dry arrangement, allowing the engine to be mounted lower to benefit the SLS’s center of gravity. The maximum output of 563 horsepower is delivered at 6800 rpm, and peak torque of 479 pound-feet comes at 4750 rpm.

In order to satisfy emissions standards—EU5, LEVII, ULEV—the Bosch ME 9.7 AMG engine management is set up to recharge the battery during deceleration. It’s another way of trying to eke out decent fuel economy, which, based on Mercedes’ European estimates, should equate to roughly 13 mpg city and 20 highway.

HAVING the right car for the conditions has helped local motor sport ace Stuart Inwood “clean up” during round five of the NSW Hillclimb Championships held at Grafton earlier this month.
Inwood took outright honours in his Nissan Skyline R33 GTR. He also recorded the fastest time for a tintop and as well as taking first place in the sports sedan class.

A mechanic by trade, an indication of Inwood’s fine form can be judged by the fact that the last time a tintop racer won the event outright was way back in 1999.

It was a big day for the Bathurst contingent who headed north for the weekend with Scott Tutton just being edged out by Inwood for the outright victory.

However, Tutton’s sizzling performance did earn him a win in his Type SV class.

Not to be outdone, David Tutton rounded off a big weekend for the locals with victory in the Improved Production Over 3000cc class.

Inwood yesterday described what a nail biting day it was at Grafton.

“There were six cars all within 100th of a second of each other for the last three runs,” he said.

“In the end the biggest battle came down to myself and Scott who was driving an EVO.

“He did a great job on his final run of the day and I was five cars later. I only just managed to bump him off the top spot.”

Maserati welcomed a group of Lady Clients who attended Salon Prive Ladies' Day at Syon Park.

The day began at Medicosmetic Spa in Cadogan Gardens in London, where the clients were presented with a champagne breakfast and personalised mini treatments of their choice. A professional make-up artist from the Jemma Kidd make-up school was also available for express make-up sessions.

You've heard it before and you'll hear it again, the McLaren F1 is world's best supercar. It's currently the most expensive modern supercar in the used market and it has a performance pedigree to backup up the heavy price tag.

The story begins in 1988 when partners of the McLaren Cars Ltd - the world's leading Formula One team, winning 15 out of 16 races - finished their successful season and decided that they should move beyond their current program and go one step further by building the finest road car possible. To them, this meant developing a no comprise supercar, built with nearly endless funds to achieve the highest power to weight ratio but retain usability for everyday driving.

To meet these goals, technical director of McLaren Gordan Murray and stylist Peter Stevens realized that the car had to be small, use the lightest components available and have a large capacity, normally aspirated V12 engine. Little did they know, this design philosophy would break many speed records and win championships it wasn't even originally intended for.

Four years after the McLaren's costly development, the first car made its official debut at the 1992 Monaco F1 week where McLaren could finally reveal to world what they had been doing. At Monaco, the targeted customer base learned that only 100 examples would be made, and that the McLaren would be the fastest, most exclusive car in the world. These attributes and gorgeous styling helped potential clients look past the 634 500 GBP price tag and beyond competitors like the Ferrari F40, Porsche 959 and Jaguar XK220.

After its release, the F1's potential was immediately realized when it reached 0-100-0 in 11.4 seconds and a record top speed of 240.14mph in its XP5 pre-production trim. Although, the success didn't stop in the record books, as special GTR versions won Le Mans outright in 1995 and took two FIA GT World Championships.

The F1's success can be attributed the McLaren's Formula One expertise. The small dedicated team picked by Gordan Murray designed 5000 individual pieces which were predominantly carbon fiber, magnesium, titanium to keep minimum weights. The car's carbon fiber monocoque was the world's first and supported BMW's impressive BMW S70/2, 620 horsepower engine. This engine produced considerable heat, so the engine compartment was lined with pure gold and air conditioning came as standard. But the greatest innovation was its seating arrangement.

To show off McLaren's dedication and Formula heritage, Murray used a central drivers seat and provided an option for two seats on either side. Like a race car, this provided the best possible view and was the good example of how uncompromising the F1 was. Additionally the McLaren wasn't equipped with any driving aids which meant it lacked traction control, ABS, power brakes and power steering.

Included with the purchase of every McLaren was bevy of lush appointments including a specially designed lightweight stereo, a tailored golf back, custom fitted luggage and the mother of all full tool boxes, used for McLaren personal to use if they needed to do remote work on the customers car. Included was a modem, which could send data directly to McLaren. With this, one customer in Germany was found to reach 200 mph almost daily on his way to and from work!

After delivering 100 customer cars McLaren stopped production after seven prototypes, 64 road cars, 5 special F1 LMs (built to commemorate victory at Le Mans in 1995), three F1 GTs (road going versions of the long tail 1997 F1 GTR race car) and 28 F1 GTR road cars. Of these, the Sultan of Brunei owns the most, and has two very special black F1 LMs with striking Pininfarina graphics as well as an exact replica of the F1 GTR that won LeMans.

Since delivery, McLaren have stayed committed to the F1 and continue to service the many cars. Almost every car has been returned to the factory and some have received custom modifications to suit the needs of their owners. The most radical of these are the few race cars which were converted back to road cars with the most minimal of changes. Other less daring cars have treatments that include new aerodynamic packages and custom interiors. As these cars get better, they keep the F1 up to pace with modern alternatives such as the Ferrari Enzo, Porsche Carrera GT and Koenigsegg CCX.

Christies on F1 #073, `Extra High Downforce'

#073, a stunning one owner example was delivered by McLaren in 1998 and this particular collector wanted a unique car which combined the best of both worlds; the performance of the LM with the internal comforts of the standard model thus giving the uncompromised option of everyday road use.

After the car was purchased, McLaren offered to undertake this extraordinary project in their workshops in Woking, England. It began with the fitment of their GTR-inspired High Downforce Package which dramatically improved high speed road holding and stability. Later additional improvement was requested to increase the aerodynamic capability of the car in an effective but visually subtle manner thus it was decided to add louvres to the tops of the front wings and balance the rear end of the car with a 4mm 'Gurney flap'. Documented testing at Bruntingthorpe proving ground in May 2000 evaluated these additions and the conclusion was the following; `The additional downforce enhances the existing levels of grip and stability and provides a great feeling of confidence and security, particularly at high speed.' In addition to this, McLaren installed larger radiators and a sports exhaust system along with a set of forged multi-spoke wheels (exclusive to this car) brandishing suitably colossal Michelin tyres all round. To complete this marvel an updated LM engine was installed; producing an astonishing 691bhp at 7500rpm and 735 NM of torque (dyno test sheet can be provided upon request) it makes a significant performance improvement. It is important to acknowledge the significance of this upgrade as there is only one other McLaren F1 roadcar with this engine.

An additional fax sent from McLaren in August 2000 complimented this astonishing car even further; McLaren's most experienced test driver commented that this car was `the ultimate F1 variant, having the best combination of performance, stability, grip and handling, whilst still being practical for road use'.

Unbelievable to think it possible for the greatest Supercar of all time, but with performance raised to an uncompromised optimum level, seemingly there could be no further necessary requirements. However thanks to the comprehensive options and upgrade packages offered by the McLaren factory to this privileged individual, it was decided to respray and retrim the car to his desired combination. A unique dark tangerine metallic colour was chosen, as the studio photography shows, the result is absolutely mesmerising and for long-term protection from stonechips Armourfend (a ultra thin, transparent film) has been applied to the most prone areas such as the nose, headlights and wing mirrors. In complimentary contrast, the interior was trimmed to 'GT specification' with a magnolia alcantara headlining and magnolia wilton carpets, the driver s seat was privileged with magnolia nubuck leather with beige alcantara inserts and the passenger seats were mirrored in beige alcantara with magnolia nubuck leather inserts. To finish and sharpen the visual appearance the dashboard was trimmed in black alcantara and black wilton overmats adorn the footwells.

Also uprated is the air conditioning system. In the cockpit there is a 14 inch leather-trimmed steering wheel and a Phillips satellite navigation system nestles in the left footwell within a custom-made carbon fibre casing. Notably the carbon fibre instrument panel incorporates a gear change light and the chassis number is engraved into the rev counter. Whilst in the car, you have the ability to listen to the stereo, the two-way radio Motorola communication system, the navigation satellite and/or converse with each other whilst on the move (with or without using the helicopter-rated intercom system and Peltor headsets). Other factory upgrades on this most select McLaren include gas discharge headlights, lightly tinted side windows and as a custom request the F1 motifs on the doors and the sides of the rear wing have been painted silver. To complete the astonishing achievement Gordon Murray himself has hand-signed this supercar on the carbon fibre area in between the chassis plate and the gear stick in silver permanent marker.

On December 2nd, 2003, Christies sold #073 for 731 250 GBP or $1 259 00 USD. At such a price this transaction has been the highest price paid at auction for a motor car in 2003.

These are the first official photographs of the redesigned Range Rover that will be making its premiere along with its facelifted Range Rover Sport sibling and the Discovery / LR3 at the New York International Auto Show. Land Rover's premium SUV has received mild styling tweaks in and out along with a series of mechanical upgrades that include the addition of a new 5.0-liter supercharged V8 engine.
The design enhancements to the 2010 Range Rover include subtle exterior revisions with changes to the headlights, grille and bumper as well as the new 'three-stripe' LED indicators and redesigned three-section fender vents.
The SUV's interior benefits from new leather trim for the headlining, pillar and door casings while the facia buttons now feature a satin chrome-plated finish. Moreover, the 2010 model features a new dual view touch screen infotainment system plus what Land Rover claims to be the world's largest configurable 12-in. Thin Film Transistor (TFT) screen which is found in the instrument cluster.
The most important news under the hood concerns the replacement of the 4.2-liter Supercharged V8 with a new 5.0-litre supercharged V8 petrol engine which is the same one used in the Jaguar XFR. It develops an output of 510HP and a peak torque of 625Nm.
Land Rover supports that despite the significant hike in both power (29 percent) and torque (+12 percent), the new supercharged V8 improves fuel consumption by 7.3 percent to 19mpg UK (14.8 lt/100km or 15.6mpg US) on the EU cycle and CO2 emissions by 7.4 percent to 348g/km, compared with its 4.2-litre Supercharged predecessor.
Other improvements for the 2010 Range Rover include the more powerful braking system, the updated Terrain Response and Stability Control systems and the new surround camera system which helps make parking easier.

MINI Coupe debuts with integrated Facebook and Twitter

Not so long ago did we report about the all new super-compact 2012 MINI Coupe dressed in designer camouflage, and now the Coupe has been unofficially unmasked revealing more interesting details.

The Coupe shall be available in three variants, each featuring engines of different calibres. The range starts from the Mini Cooper Coupe which sports the 1.6-litre four-cylinder gasoline motor churning out 121 hp at 6,000 rpm and 160 Nm of torque at 4,250 rpm – this range-starter Coupe can do the 0-100 kph dash in a claimed 8.3 seconds and can hit a top speed of 228 kph. The basic Coupe also has the best fuel efficiency figures, which is a whopping 5.4 litres/100 km.
Next up in the line is the MINI Cooper S Coupe which features a 1.6-litre four-cylinder gasoline engine with twin-scroll turbo charger and direct injection, sporting 181 horses at 5,500 rpm and 239 Nm of torque – with Overboost at 1,700 to 4,500 rpm, the torque figure climbs up to 260 Nm momentarily for optimal acceleration. The Cooper S Coupe is claimed to hit 100 kph in as little as 6.5 seconds and is capable of a top speed of 228 kph. Fuel efficiency figures for this Coupe variant stands at 5.8 litres/100 km.

MINI calls it a “helmet roof,” but the top on its new Cooper Coupe looks more like a baseball cap.

The three-door, two-seat subcompact is set to go on sale this fall at a starting price of $22,000, nearly two grand more than the standard Cooper on which it is based.

Shorter and a bit heavier than the Cooper -- thanks to extensive chassis bracing that carries over from an upcoming two-seat convertible Cooper Roadster model -- MINI says the Coupe will offer the best performance and handling in its lineup.

Available in Cooper Coupe, Cooper S Coupe and John Cooper Works Coupe versions, the cars will be powered by 122 hp, 184 hp and 211 hp engines respectively. The price for the top model is $31,900.

The Coupe’s unique roof incorporates a spoiler at its trailing edge which hangs over the rear window and directs air over a retractable wing that is located at the rear of the hatch and deploys at high speeds. MINI promises acceleration of 6.1 seconds to 60 mph and a top speed of 149 mph. EPA-rated fuel economy figures have not been released, but the standard Cooper is good for 32 mpg combined.

Interestingly, with nearly 10 cubic feet of space under the hatchback, MINI’s smallest vehicle has the most luggage room of any of its cars, save for the relatively gargantuan Cooper Countryman. Of course, the others let you expand the compartment by lowering their rear seats, something that isn’t possible in the two-place Coupe.

Lamborghini Reventón (pronounced: reh-bent-ohn) is a mid-engined sports car that debuted at the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show. It is currently the most powerful and expensive Lamborghini road car to date, costing one million euro. The official press release states that only 20 will be built (and one for the Lamborghini Museum). The exterior styling was inspired by the F-22 Raptor. Although the exterior is partially new, almost the entire mechanics (including the engine) are taken directly from the Murciélago LP640.

Initial reports suggest that the 6.5 litre V12 may receive a power boost of approximately 15 kilowatts (20 horsepower), bringing the new ouput close to 490 kW (650 horsepower). In spite of this, and the car's carbon fibre components, the Reventón accelerates to 100 km/h (62 mph) in the same time as the Murciélago LP640 (3.4 seconds).

The instrument panel in the Reventón comprises three TFT liquid crystal displays (LCDs) with two different display modes. The instruments are housed in a structure milled from a solid aluminum block, protected by a carbon fiber casing. The G-Force-Meter is completely new and it is one of the talking points of the Reventón. What We Know About the 2012 Porsche Boxster

Constantly changing government regulations are a burden for carmakers everywhere, but 2011 will be a tougher year than most. That's when Europe begins phasing in lower CO2 emissions limits and tougher fuel-economy standards start ramping up in the U.S. Both laws carry stiff fines for failure to comply.

As luck would have it, lowering CO2 generally flows from lowering fuel consumption, and vice versa, which largely explains reports of a redesigned 2012 Porsche Boxster downshifting from 6-cylinder to 4-cylinder power. Not all sources concur, but most insist that the next-generation Boxster will be the first 4-cylinder Porsche since the front-engine 968 models departed in the early 1990s.

The coming CO2 and mpg imperatives drive other reported changes in the 2012 Porsche Boxster. Prime among them are reduced weight, which should also benefit handling, and a new aerodynamics package (see "Notable Feature" below). These same revisions also mark the next rear-engine 911s, the redesigned 991-series that's expected to start a U.S. rollout for model-year 2012. The new Boxsters, known to Porsche as project 981, reportedly bow about six months later, at least in Europe. They could be tagged 2013s by the time U.S. sales kick off.

The Mercedes-Benz SLK roadster has received a substantial makeover for 2012, with reworked powertrains and more masculine sheetmetal. The SLK350's new 3.5-liter V6 helps back up that fresh dose of manliness with 302 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, thanks to the addition of direct injection. Having driven the roadster, we found the upgrades help make the car more entertaining to drive, and now we can put a price tag on these refinements.

Mercedes-Benz has announced that the 2012 SLK350 will start at $55,675 (*including $875 in destination charges). That's a $1,500 increase over the 2011 model – a fair shake considering the updates. For comparison's sake, the folding hardtop SLK350 carries an MSRP that's $4,800 more than the Audi TTS Roadster and $950 more than the BMW Z4 sDrive35i. It does, however, continue to price out lower than the similarly powered Porsche Boxster S, which starts at $58,600. The SLK350 goes on sale on June 1.

If $55,675 is too rich or too powerful for your blood, you can opt to wait until February for the SLK250. Unfortunately, Mercedes hasn't announced pricing for the SLK250, but we do know that it will feature a 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 201 horsepower and 229 lb-ft of torque. Kiss is competing in the Team classification and has been head and shoulders above the others this weekend. In Race 1, he beat off Cedric Sbirrazzuoli from AF Corse and Janos Vida, his fellow Hungarian from Auto 2 magazine, racing as a guest. The Team podium was rounded off by Emanuele Smurra, Swiss Team (11th overall). In the second race, Kiss cruised away after a series of quick laps. Behind him, Phil Bastiaans (competing in the Team series) made up for the morning race when he had to pull out with a puncture. He just considers himself…a bit more…discerning than most men in his position. And yes, he's quite aware there aren't many. Men in his position, that is.
So, for example, his suits are not Armani. They are not Zegna. They are, in fact, made for him by hand, by a reclusive (and surprisingly young) tailor whose name, and location, he does not feel inclined to reveal. Friends wonder, because the lining of each jacket and vest is so unusually bright, flashing when he turns suddenly…but they'll never ask.
His watch is, in fact, a Rolex. But not one you can buy. Not since before the First World War.
And then there is the car.
It's not a Mercedes S-Class – the car almost everyone in his position sees as proof of their success. It's not a BMW 7-Series – the car a few of his friends have chosen to show that they're still young and vibrant enough to enjoy speeding.
No, he's driving that new Audi. The flagship one. The A8, they call it. The new 2011 one. No one has seen very many of them, but he has one already, in a deep, mirror-glossy black.
It looks a lot like him. Buttoned-down and conservative? No, not really. Somehow, it looks dangerous, like it's only pretending to be buttoned-down and conservative.
The lines, for instance. It looks a bit like the old Audi A8. Everyone has seen a few of those around over the years, though they were never as numerous as the damned old Mercedes or the overweight big Bimmers with their overweight owners.
Only, like him, the Audi is somehow trimmer this year. It's lost weight and put on muscle. It's no smaller than the old one – bigger if anything – but it looks more capable of violence. It looks like the old A8 after a year of hard training. The deep character lines cut in the doors. The tightly-drawn sills hugging close to the road. Yes, it looks a bit like its master – capable of bench-pressing like a linebacker, but also doing gravity-defying handstands in an advanced yoga class. The car doesn't look like a brute. It looks like a black belt.
And there is, of course, that front fascia. The enormous grille, with its thin chrome cross-bars, and those LED-lined headlights with their aggressive squint. In the rearview mirror, it looks like it's going to eat you.
Those few who have been inside (all women. Make of that what you will) have seen that it's remarkably sumptuous. It seems to be designed with a nautical theme inside, with a selection of woods that goes beyond the old traditional walnut. Here, there are blonder colors, gorgeous coffee-dark leather, and a wide shift-lever that resembles the throttle from a motor yacht. The front seats seem to adjust infinitely. They massage ten different ways. They are heated and cooled.
The controls look, at first, like something out of an alien spacecraft. The MMI interface, which controls every entertainment and climate function through a series of menus on a nav screen that rises neatly from the center of the dash and hides when it isn't needed, looks too complicated to understand. It even has a touchpad, like a laptop. But, it turns out, it's actually intuitive to operate. His guests have learned it quickly, and he seems to work it efficiently, his eyes barely leaving the road.
The back seats (and here the women's eyes seem to soften just a bit at the mention) are, if anything, even more luxurious. They recline. They have their own climate controls, and are heated and cooled as well. Power footrests rise from the seats in front. A writing desk rises from the center console.
And there is that stereo. Extraordinary. Nineteen speakers, including a pair of tweeters that hide away in the corners of the dashboard and rise, balanced on little black stalks, when the car is started. (This, he will never confess, is his favorite feature). That stereo can render any music perfectly, whether it's a Mahler concerto or a devastating club mix he seems to have that, well, no one can find in any club.
Yes, it's luxurious car. But all men of his stature have those.
There is something about this one that, like its owner, seems secretive and, maybe, a little threatening.
All sedans in this price range have adjustable suspensions and performance profiles.
Most of them are jokes the engineers play on the blowhards who buy most six-figure sedans.
Go ahead, climb into any one of them and select the sporty mode, or the comfort mode, and see if you actually feel anything change. Of course, you don't.
But in his Audi, there is something to the system. Audi Drive Select, as it's called, has four profiles – normal, comfort, dynamic, and individual. In normal mode, the Audi feels almost like a BMW 7-Series. It's a bit sporty, but has a deep reservoir of road grip, thanks to its Quattro all-wheel-drive system. In comfort mode, it's as posh and gentle as any S-class. But when he throws it into dynamic, the damn thing becomes a beast.
It gets only 372 horsepower from its 4.2-liter V8, but it makes the most of every one of them. The steering is taut and firm. That Quattro system gives it so much firm grip that he can throw it into maneuvers that seem impossible in such a heavy car, and it will follow a precise line every time. It's like the big car shrinks around him when he throws into dynamic mode, and it's suddenly capable of extraordinary athleticism none of its rivals could ever match.
It makes you wonder what he's set the individual mode to do. But no one knows.
Yes, he's an eccentric man. Mysterious. Maybe a little intimidating. He's obviously phenomenally wealthy, with expensive tastes, and a hint of violence in his bearing. There aren't even whispers about what he does for a living, because everyone is afraid to voice their thoughts out loud.
They wonder what sort of man chooses the A8 when the S-Class and the 7-Series are the socially expected answers. The answer seems to be – someone with a secret capacity for inventiveness, cunning, and, perhaps, ruthless fun. Someone to be feared, or to the most daring women in his circle, enjoyed.
Someone...eccentric. And perhaps a bit more discerning than most men in his position
